Hugh R. Sanderson named Head of Investment Banking

ATB Capital Markets is pleased to announce Hugh R. Sanderson has joined the firm as Head of Investment Banking. Hugh’s expertise as a senior investment banker in both Canada and the UK brings a significant depth of knowledge, strong long-standing relationships, and a proven dedication to world-class client service.
As a trusted advisor to various board of directors and senior management of both domestic and international clients, Hugh’s focus is delivering concrete value to clients on mergers, acquisitions and capital markets activities. His primary focus has been on growth-oriented companies in the energy sector, including upstream oil and gas, oilfield services, renewables and energy infrastructure. He brings extensive experience with private equity firms and public markets.
In his 23-year tenure as an investment banker, Hugh has worked on over 200 financings with companies listed on both the TSX and LSE and participated in numerous advisory assignments around the globe. He began his career drilling natural gas wells in northern Canada and left the rigs for energy finance as an oil and gas equity research analyst for Merrill Lynch. Hugh joined FirstEnergy Capital Corp., a private employee-owned investment bank, in September 2000 as an associate in corporate finance, becoming a managing director in 2009 and executive managing director in 2015. Based in FirstEnergy’s Calgary office for 10 years, he moved to London to launch and lead FirstEnergy’s successful London platform. Most recently, Hugh was a managing director, Deal Advisory at KPMG LLP (UK) focused on transactions in energy transition.
Hugh’s educational credentials include a Master of Business Administration (Finance and International Business) from Dalhousie University and a Bachelor of Arts (Economics) from McGill University. He also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
Hugh supports a variety of charities in Canada and the UK and is currently a board member of the Canada Club and a youth rugby coach. Hugh enjoys traveling and is a year-round outdoor enthusiast.
